Evolving Innovative Solutions™ - Since 1993
Brisbane, Australia - Dr. Gary B. Fogel, CEO of Natural Selection, Inc., presented a plenary lecture to the attendees at the 2012 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (IEEE WCCI 2012) in Brisbane, Australia today. The title of his lecture was "A Survey of Applications and Future Directions of Computational Intelligence." The lecture was unique in that it was the first time in the history of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society that a plenary lecture was made available to the general public to also attend in addition to conference attendees." It is important to the future of computational intelligence that these methods be explained to the public at large so that they have an understanding how these approaches are already embedded in many everyday household applications and are gaining increasing utility with each day. I hope the lecture not only provided a short history of the field, but a view of the breadth of this application, and perhaps future applications we might see in our lifetime," said Dr. Fogel. Additional information on the plenary can be found by clicking here. Dr. Fogel was in Australia for a series of four lectures, including a short course at ADFA in Canberra earlier in the week.
While at IEEE WCCI 2012, Dr. Fogel also presented research co-authored with Dr. Sevan Ficici, Sr. Staff Scientist, and Enoch Liu, Staff Scientist at Natural Selection, Inc. Entitled "Evolutionary Algorithms for Supertree Search," as a part of a bioinformatics special session. This paper highlights an approach to combine phylogenetic trees towards the construction of a "supertree" using evolutionary algorithms for optimization.
Dr. Fogel was also interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) as part of a televised review of the IEEE WCCI 2012 event, focusing in particular on computational intelligence methods for robotics and games. The television clip can be found here. Dr. Fogel also participated as an expert panelist for a student competition organized by the IEEE CIS Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) subcommittee. The panel reviewed novel research ideas in computational intelligence proposed by students from around the world. The winner received an iPad2 from the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. Additional information can be found here.
Natural Selection, Inc. was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and discovery of important patterns and processes in bioinformatics and medical informatics, computer-assisted diagnosis, and a variety of military and industrial projects.
