Dr. Gary Fogel Co-authors Article on Anti-malarial drug screening in the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modeling

San Diego, CA - The October issue of the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modeling features an article co-authored by Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President and Mars Cheung, Staff Scientist of Natural Selection, Inc. together with Dr. David Hecht and Eric Pittman of Southwestern College. The article is entitled "In Silico Screening Against Wild-type and Mutant Plasmodium falciparum Dihydrofolate Reductase." The article presents modeling studies for a series of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitors to better understand the differences and similarities of binding of these inhibitors between wild-type and resistant strains of the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum. “While malaria continues to evolve resistance to known inhibitors, studies like this will help to decipher the mechanisms of resistance so that future high-throughput screening experiments can focus on compounds that are likely to be active against both wild-type and resistant strains,” said Dr. Fogel.
