Dr. Gary Fogel Co-authors Article on High-Throughput Ligand Screening in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics

San Diego, CA - The July-September issue of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics features an article co-authored by Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc. and Dr. David Hecht of Southwestern College entitled "High-Throughput Ligand Screening via Preclustering and Evolved Neural Networks." The article presents results that suggest preclustering of small molecules prior to optimization of neural network models via evolutionary computation offers superior performance for HIV inhibitor screening. "These methods can be used to increase the rate at which active or even mildly active compounds are separated from inactive compounds at early phases of drug discovery, leading to higher-throughput and more cost-effective search process. In addition, the feature reduction that is possible simultaneously with model optimization allows the chemist to identify features that are important for new compound synthesis," said Dr. Fogel. The article and supplementary material can be found at: http://doi.ieeecomputersociety.org/10.1109/tcbb.2007.1038
