Dr. Gary Fogel Co-authors Article on Prediction of HIV-1 Co-receptor Usage in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics

San Diego, CA - An article co-authored by Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc. and entitled "Prediction of R5, X4, and R5X4 HIV-1 Co-receptor Usage with Evolved Neural Networks," has been published with the journal IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The article, written together with Susanna Lamers (BioInfoExperts), Dr. Marco Salemi (University of Florida), and Dr. Michael McGrath (University of California, San Francisco), presents results that suggest preclustering of small molecules prior to optimization of neural network models via evolutionary computation offers superior performance for HIV inhibitor screening. "Prediction of viral co-receptor usage or tropism is an important topic in virology and the identification of key features that can be used to discriminate different viral types is of great interest," said Dr. Fogel. "It was a pleasure to work with the co-authors on this project, which will lead to a continue series of advancements."
