Dr. David Fogel Gives Marschak Lecture at UCLA
La Jolla CA - Dr. David Fogel, CEO of Natural Selection, Inc., presented a lecture in the Marschak Colloquium on Mathematics in the Behavioral Sciences at UCLA today. His talk, “The Future of Intelligent Machines,” focused on the combination of bio-inspired methods of machine intelligence and human intelligence for problem solving. The Marschak lecture series has been the venue for many Nobel Prize winners and other world-class contributors to the natural sciences, social sciences, and organizational management. The Marschak Colloquium provides a forum for interaction among faculty, students, and visitors interested in the applications of mathematics and statistics in the behavioral sciences. The Colloquium sponsors presentations by leading experts in the fields of anthropology, architecture, artificial intelligence, biology, business, computer science, economics, education, engineering, geography, linguistics, management, operations research, philosophy, political science, psychology, public health, public planning and policy, sociology, and systems analysis. An annual highlight is the Jacob Marschak Memorial Lecture.
“I’m extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to present this lecture to such a technically strong and diverse audience here at UCLA,” said Dr. Fogel, who also serves as a member of the external advisory committee of UCLA's Human Complex Systems Program. “I’m pleased to note our family’s long history with UCLA as well,” added Dr. Fogel, “with my brother Gary earning his Ph.D. in biology in 1998 and my father, Larry, doing his pioneering Ph.D. work in evolutionary computing here in 1964 which served as the basis for the first book on evolutionary algorithms.” The book Artificial Intelligence Through Simulated Evolution, by Lawrence J. Fogel (president of Natural Selection, Inc.), Alvin J. Owens, and Michael J. Walsh, was published in 1966 by John Wiley. “Our connection to UCLA makes this opportunity to participate in the Marschak series that much more special,” offered Dr. Fogel.
