Dr. Gary Fogel Gives Invited Lecture at Annual Meeting of the Statistical Society of Canada

The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada – Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., gave an invited lecture today to the attendees of the Bioinformatics session at the 34th annual meeting of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC 2006) on the campus of The University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario, Canada. The bioinformatics session was chaired by Dr. Daniel Ashlock of the University of Guelph. Dr. Fogel’s lecture was titled “Applications of Computational Intelligence to Pattern Discovery in Biological Systems.” He addressed applications of evolutionary computation and neural networks to a wide assortment of problems at different levels of biological information processing within the cell. He identified challenges for 21st century systems biology and presented potential solutions offered in the areas of pattern discovery in gene identification, expression analysis, transcription factor binding site identification, drug target identification, and gene network reconstruction.

“It was a pleasure to be able to address a largely statistical audience and introduce many of the participants to methods of computational intelligence that work well when nonlinearity exists in the data and/or where exhaustive search is impracticle. I feel that both the statistics community stands to benefit greatly from an adoption of computational intelligence methods and that the computational intelligence comunity stands to benefit with additional statistical interpretation," said Dr. Fogel. "Thank you to Dr. Ashlock for providing me with this opportunity."

Additional details on the conference can be found at the SSC 2006 website.
