Natural Selection, Inc. Personnel Provide Tutorial, Special Session, and Lecture at IEEE CEC2005
Edinburgh, United Kingdom Researchers at Natural Selection, Inc. participated extensively in the 2005 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation at Napier University, Edinburgh, UK, September 2nd to 5th. The conference typically draws over 400 participants from all over the world to discuss both theoretical and practical advancements in the field of evolutionary computation.
Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President, co-presented a tutorial with Dr. Kay Wiese of Simon Fraser University on "Evolutionary Computation in Bioinformatics." This one-hour tutorial gave a basic introduction to biological concepts and provided a few examples of direct application of evolutionary computation methods to problems in bioinformatics on Friday, September 2.
Dr. Fogel also co-chaired a special session on "Bioinformatics and Bioscience Applications" on Friday, September 2. The session contained 12 lectures on topics covering DNA fragment assembly, protein folding, and drug design. This session included a paper entitled “Derivation of Quantitative Structure-Toxicity Relationships for Ecotoxicological Effects of Organic Chemicals: Evolving Neural Networks and Evolving Rules,” co-authored by Dr. Fogel and Mr. Mars Cheung, Staff Scientist at Natural Selection, Inc. The paper compares and contrasts the utility of evolved neural networks and evolved rule representations for the prediction of toxicity for a set of small molecules. The results indicated that new methods of representing problems as rule sets can exceed the performance of neural networks for toxicity prediction.
“This was an exciting opportunity to highlight Natural Selection, Inc.’s efforts in bioinformatics and evolutionary computation to our scientific peers, and educate newcomers to bioinformatics through a tutorial and special session” said Dr. Fogel. “I hope this encourages additional participation in these areas in the near future.”
