Dr. Gary Fogel Gives Keynote Lecture at the Sixth International Workshop on Information Processing in Cells and Tissues
St. William’s College, York, United Kingdom Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., gave a keynote address today to the attendees of the Sixth International Workshop on Information Processing in Cells and Tissues (IPCAT 2005) on the campus of St. William’s College in York, United Kingdom. The conference was organized by Prof. Stephen L. Smith of the University of York. Dr. Fogel’s lecture was titled “Applications of Computational Intelligence to Pattern Discovery in Biological Systems.” He addressed applications of evolutionary computation and neural networks to a wide assortment of problems at different levels of biological information processing within the cell. He identified challenges for 21st century systems biology and presented potential solutions offered in the areas of pattern discovery in gene identification, expression analysis, transcription factor binding site identification, drug target identification, and gene network reconstruction.
“Information processing in cells will remain a central focus of systems biology for years to come,” said Dr. Fogel. “It was a pleasure to be able to address this growing community and describe methods of computational intelligence that can be applied to problems of pattern recognition and discovery in bioinformatics contexts. I feel that this community stands to benefit greatly from an adoption of these methods when attempting to understand the nonlinear interactions common to cellular processes.”
Additional details on the conference can be found at the IPCAT 2005 website.
