Natural Selection, Inc. Publishes Statistical Analysis of Transcription Factor Database in BioSystems
La Jolla, CA As part of a collaborative effort, Dr. Gary B. Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., has published a paper titled "A statistical analysis of the TRANSFAC® database" in the journal BioSystems. Transcription factors are key regulatory elements that control gene expression. A statistical analysis of all known transcription factor families in the TRANSFAC® database is presented. The analysis suggests that current definition of transcription factor binding site core regions in TRANSFAC® should be re-examined so as to capture a more precise notion of "cores." Insight is offered into more appropriate definitions of transcription factor binding site consensus sequences and core regions. These revised definitions provide a better understanding of the nature of transcription factor-DNA binding and assist with developing algorithms for de novo transcription factor binding site discovery.
