Natural Selection, Inc. to Present Poster with Althea Technologies at the 2005 Conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology

San Diego, CA – Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., together with collaborators at Althea Technologies and Dr. Javed Khan of the National Cancer Institute, announced that application of NSI's computational intelligence methods for quantitative gene expression in cancer diagnosis will be presented at the 41st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), scheduled for May 13 - 17, 2005, in Orlando, Florida.

The poster entitled "Application of Multiplexed RT-PCR for Cancer Diagnosis" describes Althea Technologies' and Natural Selection, Inc.'s ongoing research efforts in the translation of gene expression profiles into validated, quantitative gene expression assays that serve as genetic biomarkers for the diagnosis of pediatric cancers, such as neuroblastoma and Burkitt's lymphoma. The most recent results of their research demonstrated that their method using multiplexed RT-PCR, coupled with intelligent data analysis approaches, may be an effective tool for analyzing tumor samples.

Natural Selection, Inc.'s contribution to the project includes expertise in developing gene signatures for diseases with computational intelligence methods. Althea Technologies is providing its eXpress ProfilingTM technology for the effort, which is a high-throughput, highly-multiplexed, PCR-based gene expression analysis technique that can be used to quantitate the gene expression values of 20-40 genes in a single PCR reaction. "I am very excited that our computational intelligence methods are resulting in key diagnostic features with direct medicinal value. We look forward to continued progress in this regard," said Dr. Fogel.

Joe Monforte, of Althea Technologies, remarked, "We are decidedly optimistic that our work with the National Cancer Institute in collaboration with Natural Selection, Inc. will help to illustrate the broad applicability of our eXpress ProfilingTM technology and believe that gene expression analysis paired with sophisticated algorithms will lead to real improvements in cancer diagnosis and treatment."
