Natural Selection, Inc. Publishes RNA Structure Paper in BioSystems
La Jolla, CA – Dr. Gary B. Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., in collaboration with researchers at Ibis Therapeutics (Carlsbad, CA), has published a paper titled "Identification of Conserved Regulatory RNA Structures in Prokaryotic Metabolic Pathway Genes" in the journal BioSystems (Vol. 80/2 pp. 145-154). This new research highlights the application of a combination of algorithms including evolutionary computation towards the determination of RNA structural features that have the potential to serve in a regulatory manner within prokaryotes. The importance of RNA structures, or "riboswitches" to gene regulation is becoming increasingly apparent, especially within metabolic pathways. The computational approaches demonstrated in this publication outline a means to discovery putative structures that are common to several messenger RNAs, narrowing the search for novel regulatory features.
