Natural Selection, Inc. Publishes RNA Structure Paper in BioSystems
La Jolla, CA Dr. Gary B. Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., in collaboration with researchers at Ibis Therapeutics (Carlsbad, CA), has published a paper titled "Identification of Conserved Regulatory RNA Structures in Prokaryotic Metabolic Pathway Genes" in the journal BioSystems (Vol. 80/2 pp. 145-154). This new research highlights the application of a combination of algorithms including evolutionary computation towards the determination of RNA structural features that have the potential to serve in a regulatory manner within prokaryotes. The importance of RNA structures, or "riboswitches" to gene regulation is becoming increasingly apparent, especially within metabolic pathways. The computational approaches demonstrated in this publication outline a means to discovery putative structures that are common to several messenger RNAs, narrowing the search for novel regulatory features.
