Article by Dr. Gary B. Fogel is Featured in This Month's IEEE Connections

La Jolla, CA – This month's issue of IEEE Connections, the newsletter of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, includes an article written by Dr. Gary B. Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc. The Feature Article, entitled "Evolutionary Computation for the Inference of Natural Evolutionary Histories," highlights the use of evolutionary computation as an approach to estimating the history of life on Earth by inferring the phylogeny of organisms. Dr. Fogel notes how estimations of evolutionary history were significantly improved by the advent of biological sequence approaches to inferring phylogenies in the late 1960s, and have since benefitted from computational support for their interpretation. His article explores various ways in which using evolutionary computation techniques to infer phylogenies offers an opportunity for further development in phylogenetic reconstruction. He surveys some current applications of evolutionary computation to phylogenetics, and suggests areas of future research.
