Dr. Gary Fogel Presents Lecture at a Joint Meeting of the San Diego Chapters of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology and Computational Intelligence Societies
La Jolla, CA Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., presented a lecture at the joint meeting of the San Diego IEEE chapters of the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) and the Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) today. The meeting was held at the offices of Trex Enterprises in San Diego.
Dr. Fogel’s lecture was titled, “Applications of Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics,” and provided an overview of promising results and case studies to highlight the importance of computational intelligence applications in biology. Many biologically relevant problems can be restated in the form of an optimization task to provide a reasonable approximation of a globally optimal solution (e.g., protein folding, drug docking). This is also the case when developing models for the examination of large data sets such that trends in the data can be extracted for a better understanding of biological function. Such an understanding leads directly to better remediation through biochemical action (i.e., drugs, chemotherapy) in the case of cancer and other diseases.
“I am pleased to have been invited to present the results of our recent applications in bioinformatics and to help develop a bridge between these two local IEEE chapters. Clearly there are many problems in biology that can benefit from computational intelligence approaches. I hope that this lecture helps to facilitate additional interest and experimentation by local researchers,” said Dr. Fogel.
Natural Selection, Inc. was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and discovery of important patterns and processes in bioinformatics and medical informatics, computer-assisted diagnosis, and a variety of military and industrial projects.
