Dr. Gary Fogel Publishes Chapter in New Book: Evolutionary Computation in Data Mining

La Jolla, CA – Dr. Gary B. Fogel, Vice President at Natural Selection, Inc. has contributed a chapter to a new book titled, Evolutionary Computation in Data Mining, edited by Ashish Ghosh and Lakhmi C. Jain, of India and Australia, respectively. The chapter, titled "Microarry Data Mining with Evolutionary Computation," reviews the use of machine learning algorithms including artificial neural networks and evolutionary computation for the analysis of gene expression data. Particular attention is paid to the application of neural networks for classification of known cell types from microarray data as well as the application of evolutionary computation to automated clustering of expression data where the number of cell types may not be known a priori.

"Neural networks are becoming more routine in biomedical applications," says Dr. Fogel, "and the evolutionary approach to designing and optimizing those neural networks can lead to more parsimonious models that may be of greater practical impact than with other optimization methods." The book is published by Springer, 2005.

Natural Selection, Inc. was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense.
