Dr. Gary Fogel to Present Lecture at a Joint Meeting of the San Diego Chapters of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology and Computational Intelligence Societies on “Applications of Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics”
La Jolla, CA Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc., will present a lecture at the joint meeting of the San Diego IEEE chapters of the EMBS and the CIS on February 23, 2005.
Titled, “Applications of Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics,” Dr. Fogel’s presentation will discuss the use of data mining tools and optimization techniques to enhance areas of genomics and systems biology for medical uses.
Many biologically-relevant problems can be restated in the form of an optimization task to provide a reasonable approximation of a globally optimal solution (e.g., protein folding, drug docking). This is also the case when developing models for the examination of large data sets such that trends in the data can be extracted for a better understanding of biological function. Such an understanding leads directly to better remediation through biochemical action (i.e., drugs, chemotherapy) in the case of cancer and other diseases. Thus, a main effort in computational biology and bioinformatics is the development of data mining tools that can assist the biologist in making key decisions that will reflect in more desirable courses of medical action and/or better future experimentation.
Dr. Fogel will review promising results from the application of computational intelligence to bioinformatics. These case studies will highlight not only the importance of such methods in modern bioinformatics but also the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration for real-world problem solving in the biological sciences.
This lecture is open to the public, and reservations can be made with Mike Borrello at (858) 646-5475 or stablesystems@ieee.org. It will take place at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, February 23 at Trex Enterprises, 10455 Pacific Center Court, San Diego, CA 92121. A social with refreshments served will start at 5:30; the talk will begin sharply at 6:00. The lecture is free for IEEE members, $5 otherwise. A map and directions to Trex Enterprises can be found at http://www.trexenterprises.com/base_media/sdmap.jpg.
