Dr. David Fogel Presents Paper at IEEE Conference on Homeland Security
Venice, Italy -- Dr. David Fogel, CEO of Natural Selection, Inc., presented a paper “Using Evolutionary Computation for Seismic Signal Detection: A Homeland Security Application,” at the 2004 IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence in Homeland Security and Personal Safety at the Hotel Ramada in Venice, Italy today. The paper, co-authored by Vincent (Bill) Porto (Executive Vice President) and Dr. Lawrence Fogel (President) of Natural Selection, Inc., documents the results of experiments in which evolutionary computation and neural networks were used to detect and classify personnel and vehicles based on their seismic signatures.
The results indicated a high success rate in using multiple sensors to differentiate between people and machines, despite noisy background conditions. Mr. Porto said that the success of the experiment is a notable improvement over past attempts to use remote seismic sensing. “The U.S. Army has been studying different classification algorithms for seismic sensors for a number of years. None of it has proved all that successful - they could detect an intrusion, but could not reasonably tell whether or not it was caused by a coyote or a tank,” said Mr. Porto. But, he said, “Now we believe we’ve found the key. Evolutionary computation provides a means for accurately interpreting the data.”
Remote sensing using evolutionary computation and neural networks is a cost-effective and inconspicuous method of monitoring for intrusion. “There are many homeland security applications for this technology,” said Dr. Fogel, “including monitoring demilitarized zones and critical infrastructure, such as airports and power plants.”
Natural Selection, Inc.® was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and diagnosis of breast cancer from film-screen mammograms, optical character recognition, and a variety of military and industrial projects.
