Natural Selection, Inc.® Presents Four Articles Pertaining to Evolutionary Computation at the CEC04 Conference
Portland, OR -- Dr. Gary B. Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc.® presented a co-authored paper titled "Parameter Optimization of an Evolutionary Algorithm for RNA Structure Discovery” at the 2004 Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC04). The paper, co-authored by Dana Weekes, Staff Scientist, and Dr. Rangarajan Sampath and Dr. David Ecker of Ibis Therapeutics, compares different parameters settings of an evolutionary algorithm developed for similar RNA structure discovery. The results indicated that the ratio of parents and offspring in the evolving population had more of an impact on performance than the method of selection.
A second article, co-authored by Dr. Thiemo Krink (presenter) and Dr. René Thomsen of the EVALife Group at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, Dr. Bogdan Filipic of the Jožef Stefan Institute in Slovenia, and Dr. Gary Fogel was titled “Noisy Optimization Problems – A Particular Challenge for Differential Evolution?” This work demonstrated that standard methods of evolutionary optimization are able to outperform differential evolution on noisy problems when the fitness of candidate solutions approaches the fitness variance caused by the noise. Fogel, Chief Executive Officer of Natural Selection, Inc.®, presented a paper titled “A Platform for Evolving Characters in Competitive Games.” The paper, co-authored by Timothy J. Hays, Senior Staff Scientist, and Douglas R. Johnson of Digenetics, Inc., provided background on a platform for evolving nonplayer characters with genetic and behavioral traits, resulting in a new level of entertainment software. A fourth article, written solely by Dr. David Fogel was titled “Evolving Strategies in Blackjack.” This paper outlined a method for optimizing blackjack strategies as a whole and reported experimental results conducted to evolve basic and counting strategies for blackjack.Natural Selection, Inc.® was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and diagnosis of breast cancer from film-screen mammograms, optical character recognition, and a variety of military and industrial projects.
