Dr. Gary Fogel to Chair 2004 IEEE Symposium on Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Sponsored by IEEE Neural Networks Society

La Jolla, CA - Dr. Gary Fogel, Vice President of Natural Selection, Inc.® , will serve as the general chairman of the 2004 IEEE Symposium on Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, scheduled for October 7-8, 2004 at the Radisson La Jolla Hotel in La Jolla, California. The conference is the first such event sponsored by the IEEE Neural Networks Society.

This new symposium will bring together top researchers, practitioners, and students from around the world to discuss the latest advances in the field of computational intelligence and their application to real-world problems in biology. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: gene expression array analysis, structure prediction and folding, drug design, molecular sequence alignment and analysis, metabolic pathway analysis, medical imaging and pattern recognition, and a variety of other topics.

"I'm very pleased that the IEEE Neural Networks Society has provided us with the means to bring the top practitioners of computational intelligence together with those in the areas of bioinformatics and computational biology. These areas are replete with problems that are nonlinear, multidimensional, and contain immense numbers of possible solutions. The potential benefits of computational intelligence for problems in bioinformatics are only just becoming realized. This symposium will help to focus interest and in doing so, will narrow the gap between computer science and biotechnology," said Dr. Fogel.
