Dr. David Fogel to Chair 2004 IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence in Homeland Security and Personal Safety Sponsored by IEEE Neural Networks Society
La Jolla, CA - Dr. David Fogel, Chief Executive Officer of Natural Selection, Inc.® , will serve as co-general chairman of the 2004 IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence in Homeland Security and Personal Safety, scheduled for July 21-22, 2004 in Venice, Italy. Professor Vincenzo Piuri of the University of Milan, Italy, will also serve as co-general chairman. The conference is the first such event sponsored by the IEEE Neural Networks Society.
As homeland security and personal safety are receiving significant attention internationally, it is important to detect critical situations and recognize dangerous conditions as early as possible, to effect appropriate reactions. Adaptive and evolutionary technologies and methods are needed to ensure sufficient flexibility to achieve these goals and, in particular, to allow for adaptation to unforeseen conditions, generalization of some limited knowledge, imprecise reasoning when incomplete data are available, and global optimization to deal with changing environments. Computational intelligence, not limited to neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, multi-agent technologies, and machine learning, can be an effective and efficient approach to tackle these problems. These methods provide a means for understanding the environment, learning desired behaviors, gaining new knowledge, operating autonomously, and evolving and adapting themselves to changing conditions and needs.
This conference will establish a comprehensive specialized forum to present the most recent results in computational intelligence technologies and their applications to homeland security and personal safety. Papers are solicited on all of these aspects, from the points of view of both theory and practice. For additional information, please visit http://www.crema.unimi.it/cihsps2004.
