Natural Selection, Inc.® Wins Phase II SBIR from the United States Air Force: Two-Year Effort to Research and Develop Dynamic Situation Assessment and Prediction
La Jolla, CA – Natural Selection, Inc.® has been awarded a two-year contract in excess of $700,000 from the United States Air Force to research and develop intelligent software tools to provide dynamic situation assessment and prediction. The effort, funded under a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract, seeks to develop agent-based evolutionary computing algorithms for adaptive planning across a set of heterogeneous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Natural Selection, Inc.® will build on its progress in its Phase I research to design a full, multi-threaded system that permits the necessary communication between UAVs and a master controller to plan coordinated activities and predict future environments.
“We are very pleased that the Air Force has chosen us to develop this technology as it will greatly enhance current capabilities. The world is never static, hence the need for truly dynamic, intelligent vehicle control and planning,” said Bill Porto, executive vice president of Natural Selection, Inc.® and principal investigator on this contract. Mr. Porto added, “This research should result in a valuable dynamic situation and analysis planning tool for the Air Force, providing a much greater level of autonomy for a range of UAVs. Currently, UAVs are remotely piloted, requiring considerable human resources. This tool will automate a broad spectrum of functions, and in turn, provide significant savings in manpower costs. The technology is well suited to a variety of government and commercial applications.
