SPIE Recognizes Dr. Lawrence Fogel and Dr. David Fogel with First Computational Intelligence Pioneer Award

Orlando, FL – The Society for Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineering (SPIE) has recognized Dr. Lawrence Fogel and Dr. David Fogel, president and CEO of Natural Selection, Inc.®  respectively, with its first-ever Computational Intelligence Pioneer Award. The award was presented by Dr. Kevin Priddy, chair of the Intelligent Computing: Theory and Applications symposium, held with the AeroSense meeting sponsored by SPIE at the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando, Florida. The citation for the award reads:

“The Computational Intelligence Pioneer Award is awarded to Drs Lawrence J. Fogel and David B. Fogel for their pioneering work in the field of evolutionary computation.

Dr. Lawrence Fogel is considered to be one of the founding members in the field of evolutionary computation.  Dr. Fogel conducted much of the primary research in evolutionary programming in the early 1960s and is co-author of Artificial Intelligence Through Simulated Evolution, the first book in evolutionary computation, published by John Wiley, 1966. He holds six patents, and has over 100 publications in journals, conferences, and edited volumes. He was the founding editor of the Journal of Cybernetics (1970) and is a member of the editorial boards of Evolutionary Computation and BioSystems. In 1995, Dr. Fogel was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Evolutionary Programming Society in recognition of over 30 years of sustained contributions to the field of evolutionary computation. He was also honored by the IEEE Neural Networks Council with their first Pioneer Award in Evolutionary Computation, presented in 1998, and was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in that same year.  Dr. Fogel is the President of Natural Selection Inc. in La Jolla CA.  Natural Selection Inc. utilizes computational intelligence techniques to solve real-world problems in industry, medicine, and defense.

Dr. David B. Fogel has over 200 publications in the technical literature, the majority treating the science and application of evolutionary computation. He is the author of six books, including Blondie24: Playing at the Edge of AI, 2002 , Evolutionary Computation: Toward a New Philosophy of Machine Intelligence (second edition), IEEE Press, 2000, How to Solve It: Modern Heuristics (co-authored by Professor Zbigniew Michalewicz of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte), Springer, 2000, and Evolutionary Computation: Principles and Practice for Signal Processing (SPIE, 2000) as well as the editor of Evolutionary Computation: The Fossil Record, IEEE Press, 1998, and co-editor-in-chief of the Handbook of Evolutionary Computation, Oxford University Press, 1997.  Dr. Fogel served as the founding editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation (1996-2002), which has a circulation of several thousand IEEE members and distribution in libraries internationally. He was the founding president of the Evolutionary Programming Society (1991-1993) and was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1999. He also serves as the editor-in-chief of BioSystems, and is on the editorial boards of several other technical journals.  Dr. Fogel served as the general chairman for the 2002 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, May 12-17, 2002, and was program chair for the First IEEE Symposium on Combinations of Evolutionary Computation and Neural Networks, May 11-12, 2000, San Antonio, TX.

While these attributes are impressive, what really sets Dr. Lawrence Fogel and Dr. David Fogel apart is their willingness to teach others their craft in a manner which is both pleasurable for the recipient and understandable.  They never hesitate to help others learn more about computational intelligence techniques and applications.  Their depth of knowledge has enabled them to apply evolutionary computation techniques across a very broad set of applications.  They are living examples of a true engineering professional and role models for future engineers and scientists.”

Natural Selection, Inc.® was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and diagnosis of breast cancer from film-screen mammograms, optical character recognition, and a variety of military and industrial projects.
