Natural Selection, Inc.® Publishes RNA Structure Similarity Application of Evolutionary Algorithms in NucleicAcids Research
La Jolla, CA -- Dr. Gary B. Fogel, Senior Staff Scientist, Vincent W. Porto, Executive Vice President, Dana Weekes, Staff Scientist, and Dr. David B. Fogel, Chief Executive Officer of Natural Selection, Inc.®, in collaboration with researchers at Ibis Therapeutics (Carlsbad, CA) have published a paper titled "Discovery of RNA Structural Elements Using Evolutionary Computation" in the journal Nucleic Acids Research (Vol. 30:5310-5317). This new research highlights the application of evolutionary computation towards the analysis of biochemical sequence information for the assignment of structural folding similarity. Results indicated that the method could be used to search very large sets of possible RNA structures for similarity over wide ranges of phylogenetic distance. Using this method, the RNA structure for the signal recognition particle was identified in two newly sequenced bacteria.
