Dr. David Fogel Gives Plenary Lecture at PERMIS2000

Gaithersburg, MD -- Dr. David Fogel, CEO of Natural Selection, Inc.^®, delivered a plenary lecture at the 2002 Performance Metrics for Intelligent Systems conference, held at the National Institute for Standards and Technology today. His talk, titled “Evolving Solutions that are Competitive with Humans,” focused on the limitations of traditional artificial intelligence and the Turing Test as a mean for measuring intelligence. Dr. Fogel emphasized a definition of intelligence that is centered on adaptive behavior and illustrated this concept with the Blondie24 evolutionary neural network research, in which a neural network taught itself to play checkers at a level that is on par with human experts. “Direct comparisons to human performance provide an interesting and important way to garner insight into the behavior and quality of evolved solutions, whether those solutions might be aimed at playing checkers or controlling combat assets,” remarked Dr. Fogel. “There are subtle differences that arise when comparing computational intelligent systems and humans, as opposed to comparing them to other computational systems. Including humans in the performance loop is important particularly in combat training and other applications that we are pursuing.”
