David Fogel to Hold Book Signing at San Diego Technical Bookstore Sep. 5, 2001

La Jolla, CA -- Dr. David Fogel, chief executive officer of Natural Selection, Inc.Ò, will offer a book signing of his new book "Blondie24: Playing at the Edge of AI" at the San Diego Technical Bookstore on September 29, 2001 at 12 pm. The event, which is open to the public, will include a software demonstration where attendees can challenge Blondie24, the program that taught itself to play checkers at a level that's competitive with human experts. Blondie24, the checker program's Internet name, was created by an evolutionary algorithm that used random variation and selection on competing checkers strategies. The program, developed in collaboration with Kumar Chellapilla, senior staff scientist at Natural Selection, Inc.Ò, has been featured in the New York Times, Le Monde, The Times, FOX News Television, and the prestigious journal Nature.

Natural Selection, Inc.Ò was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and diagnosis of breast cancer from film-screen mammograms, optical character recognition, and a variety of military and industrial projects.
