Natural Selection, Inc.Ò Staff Publish Chapter in New Book: "Clinical Applications of Artificial Neural Networks"
La Jolla, CA -- Natural Selection, Inc.Ò staff have contributed a chapter to a new book titled "Clinical Applications of Artificial Neural Networks," edited by Richard Dybowski and Vanya Gant, both of the U.K. The chapter, titled "Evolving Artificial Neural Networks," written by Bill Porto (executive vice president) and David Fogel (chief executive officer) details the application of evolutionary algorithms for optimizing neural networks in medical applications. Particular attention is paid to the application of neural networks for assisting in the detection of breast cancer and classifying the severity of coronary artery disease. "Neural networks are becoming more routine in medical applications," says Dr. Fogel, "and the evolutionary approach to designing and optimizing those neural networks can lead to more parsimonious solutions, simpler models that will be easier to explain and may be of more practical impact." The book is published by Cambridge University Press, 2001.
