Natural Selection, Inc.Ò Work Featured in New Book on Computational Intelligence in Games
La Jolla, CA -- A new book from Springer titled "Computational Intelligence in Games," edited by Professor Norio Baba of Osaka-Kyoiku University and Professor Lakhmi Jain of the University of South Australia, features an article by Natural Selection, Inc. Ò scientists Kumar Chellapilla and David Fogel on evolving neural networks to play checkers. The paper, "Evolving a Neural Network to Play Checkers without Human Expertise," summarizes Chellapilla and Fogel's efforts to have a computer teach itself to play checkers at the expert level, even without relying on human expertise. "The paper reports one of the more fun experiments we did, where we played the best-evolved neural network against checkers program that's available from a well-known commercial software developer. The neural network beat the checkers program easily," said Kumar Chellapilla, senior staff scientist of Natural Selection, Inc. Professors Baba and Jain write in the Preface that "the most powerful computers in the world are not only used for scientific research, defence, and business, but also in game playing. Computer games are a multi-billion dollar industry." Dr. Fogel agreed, saying "We've applied our expertise in diverse areas, but certainly the application to combat simulations and other 'games' is one that is extremely well suited for evolutionary algorithms."
