Natural Selection, Inc. Efforts in Bioinformatics Featured in Scientific Computing World

La Jolla, CA - The February/March 2000 issue of Scientific Computing World, printed in the United Kingdom for a worldwide distribution, highlights the use of evolutionary computation in a variety of biomedical settings. Dr. David Fogel, Chief Scientist of Natural Selection, Inc. and Dr. Gary Fogel, Senior Staff Scientist of Natural Selection, Inc. are featured in the article. Specific applications include screening for malignancies in features from mammograms, pharmaceutical design, gene recognition, and multiple sequence alignment. The article focuses on results from a Phase I SBIR grant to Natural Selection, Inc. through the National Institutes of Health to evolve neural networks for gene recognition. The article, written by consultant editor Vanessa Spedding, also presents an overview of evolutionary computation as a new tool for artificial intelligence.
