Dr. David B. Fogel Publishes Second Edition of Best-Selling Book
La Jolla, CA: Dr. David B. Fogel has now published the second edition
of his best-selling book Evolutionary Computation: Toward a New
Philosophy of Machine Intelligence through the IEEE Press. The book was
originally selected as a feature choice of the Library of Science Book
Club. Evolutionary computation is one of the fastest growing areas of
computer science, and is particularly useful in generating solutions to
problems that involve competitive aspects. Dr. Fogel's book describes
some breakthrough results in the use of evolutionary algorithms to learn
strategies in games of strategy, including checkers. Starting with
essentially no preprogrammed expertise regarding features about the
game, an evolutionary algorithm was able to design artificial neural
networks that can play and defeat humans on the Internet. This type of
domain independent machine learning based only on the outcome of a game,
or even a series of games, was described as being simply
"impossible" by Alan Newell in 1963. Fogel's book also
provides an up-to-date treatment of the theory of evolutionary
computation, including the no free lunch theorem, schema theory, and the
k-armed bandit problem. The book is available from Amazon.com or other
booksellers.
Natural Selection, Inc. was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and diagnosis of breast cancer from film-screen mammograms, optical character recognition, and a variety of military and industrial projects.
