Dr. Peter J. Angeline Opens CEC'99 as General Chairman

Washington, D.C.: Dr. Peter J. Angeline, Senior Staff Scientist of Natural Selection, Inc., opened the 1999 Congress on Evolutionary Computation today as general chairman. The Congress is a combination of three conferences, the IEEE International Conference on Evolutionary Computation, the Evolutionary Programming Conference, and the Genetic Algorithms in Science and Industrial Applications Conference sponsored by the IEEE, the Evolutionary Programming Society, and the IEE, respectively. The Congress has an attendance of approximately 450 participants internationally. The peer-reviewed proceedings extends to three volumes and is available from IEEE Press. The keynote lecture was given by Dr. Gerald Edelman, nobel laureate and director of the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, CA. Dr. Edelman discussed the relation between the functionality of the brain and the processes of evolution.
