Dr. Lawrence Fogel Receives First IEEE Pioneer Award
Anchorage, AK -- Dr. Lawrence J. Fogel, president of Natural Selection, Inc., received the first Pioneer in Evolutionary Computation Award from the IEEE Neural Networks Council at the World Congress on Computational Intelligence on May 8, 1998. Dr. Fogel was recognized for his early efforts offering evolutionary computation as a tool for generating artificial intelligence. Dr. Fogel conceived of this "evolutionary programming" in 1960 while serving at the National Science Foundation and later published a series of experiments leading to the seminal book "Artificial Intelligence through Simulated Evolution," co-authored by A.J. Owens and M.J. Walsh, published by John Wiley, NY, in 1966. This was the first book to treat the subject of evolutionary computation, marking a milestone in the field.
The Pioneer Awards from the IEEE Neural Network Council are chosen based on the recommendation of an Awards Committee and approval by the governing Administrative Committee comprising all of the societies that form the council. The IEEE is the world's largest organization of engineers with over 320,000 members in 147 countries.
Natural Selection, Inc. was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's current research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and diagnosis of breast cancer from film-screen mammograms, optical character recognition, and a variety of military projects.
