Evolutionary Computation: The Fossil Record, Released
Anchorage, AK -- Natural Selection, Inc. is pleased announce the release of Dr. David Fogel's new book "Evolutionary Computation: The Fossil Record" from IEEE Press. This 650-page book provides the first complete and accurate accounting of the historical development of the field of evolutionary algorithms, dating back to the early and mid-1950s. Selected papers are reprinted along with introductions that place the work in the context of the present state-of-the-art. All of the introductions are based on interviews with the original authors and their colleagues conducted by Dr. Fogel over a period of four years. Individuals interested in evolutionary computation will find this book to be an invaluable resource.
"Personally, I'm very pleased to have the book published, but I'm even more pleased for many of the pioneers in this field who haven't received the credit that they deserve," offered David Fogel. "By far the most rewarding aspect of this project has been the opportunity to meet and/or interview people like Alex Fraser, George Friedman, Richard Friedberg, George Box, Hans Bremermann, Larry Fogel, John Holland, Ingo Rechenberg, Hans-Paul Schwefel, Michael Conrad, and so many others, who offered the original foundations of evolutionary algorithms long before it was fashionable to work in this field. I regret that several pioneers are no longer with us, but I hope they would be pleased by this effort."
The book was released at the World Congress on Computational Intelligence, held May 4-9, 1998, a joint meeting of the IEEE conferences on neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary computation. David Fogel served as program chairman for the IEEE Conference on Evolutionary Computation. His new book can be purchased directly from IEEE Press at 1-800-678-IEEE, through Amazon.com, or through Barnes & Noble and other fine bookstores.
Natural Selection, Inc. was founded in 1993 to address complex problems in industry, medicine, and defense. The company possesses unique expertise in computational intelligence techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic. The corporation's current research efforts support the discovery of new pharmaceuticals, the automated detection and diagnosis of breast cancer from film-screen mammograms, optical character recognition, and a variety of military projects.
